Single Input Multi-Output DC-DC Buck-Boost Converter: Exploring Configurations for Increased Gain and Multiple Outputs

This paper analyzes a dual-output configuration circuit with limited gain in each stage and proposes an innovative design methodology for a buck-boost converter utilizing N inductors and N stages to optimize gain performance. By charging N inductors in parallel, the circuit accumulates energy equivalent to N times the source voltage and discharges them in series, achieving an output voltage N times the source voltage—significantly enhancing gain compared to a standard buck-boost converter. Stacking N stages, each with N inductors connected to the same input, enables a maximum output voltage of N2 times the input. With its adaptable configurations and stable output voltage, this design is particularly suited for high-gain applications requiring consistent voltage, such as portable electronics and biomedical devices. Circuit simulations and analyses were conducted using Altair PSIM and MATLAB Simulink.
