Improving Students’ Performance in Mathematics using Geometer’s Sketchpad as a Learning Tool

This study investigated the effectiveness of Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP) as a learning tool in enhancing students’ performance in mathematics, specifically in geometry. Conducted at Tablon National High School, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines, the research utilized a quasi-experimental pretest-post-test control group design with 58 Grade 10 students. The experimental group (n=29) used GSP, while the control group (n=29) was taught through the lecture method. Data were collected using pretest and post-test questionnaires sourced from the Grade 10 Mathematics Learner’s Module. Results revealed no significant difference in pretest scores between the two groups. However, post-test scores demonstrated a significant improvement in the experimental group compared to the control group, with a mean difference of 1.965517 (pt;0.05). Paired t-tests further indicated substantial gains in both groups, with GSP yielding higher performance improvements. The findings highlight the effectiveness of GSP in fostering student engagement, understanding, and problem-solving skills in geometry. It is recommended to integrate technology-driven tools like GSP in mathematics classrooms and to explore similar studies in other branches of mathematics to maximize its potential in improving learning outcomes.
