Desulfovibrio desulfuricans bacteraemia: a rare and intriguing clinical challenge

This case report presents a rare and intriguing instance of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans bacteraemia in a 51-year-old Malaysian gentleman with a history of corrosive esophagis and mulple complex abdominal surgeries. The paent developed intra-abdominal sepsis due to an ileocolic anastomoc leak, which was further complicated by a bloodstream infecon.Despite inial challenges in microbial idenficaon, D. desulfuricans, an anaerobic sulphate-reducing bacterium, was ulmately isolated from blood cultures and idenfied via 16S rRNA sequencing aer convenonal diagnosc methods failed. This case underscores the significant diagnosc hurdles, therapeuc complexies, and clinical implicaons associated with rare anaerobic bacteraemia in crically ill paents.By shedding light on the challenges of idenfying and managing such infecons, this report highlights the crucial role of advanced molecular diagnoscs and muldisciplinary intervenon in achieving successful paent outcomes.
