Impact of Wet and Dry Ambient Conditions on the Lifespan of Lithium-Ion Polymer Batteries: A Correlation Analysis by Cycle Life Experiment
This study investigates the correlation between significant air thermo-physical properties and the lifespan of lithium-ion polymer (LiPo) batteries using a cycle life experiment. The experiment utilized two distinct psychrometric conditions ambient and dry to analyse the impact of air properties such as dry-bulb temperature, relative humidity, and enthalpy on battery performance during fast charging. The methodology involved cycling LiPo batteries in controlled conditions within a dry box and monitoring their charge and discharge characteristics. Results indicate that both temperature and humidity significantly influence the capacity fade and overall lifespan of LiPo batteries. The capacity fade under dry conditions was 18.2%, while under ambient conditions it was 18.3%, resulting in a difference of 0.1%. The data obtained from the cycling performance and psychrometric analysis were used to determine the optimal thermal comfort zone for LiPo batteries. The study concludes that maintaining specific air properties can enhance battery lifespan, which is crucial for applications in electric vehicles and portable electronic devices. Statistical analysis identified the most significant air thermo-physical property affecting battery lifespan, providing a basis for improving battery management systems in varying environmental conditions.
