Male Breast Cancer: Case Report with Review of Literature and Insights into Gender-specific Considerations
Male breast cancer is an extremely rare entity accounting for ˂1% of cancers in males and still remains an unaddressed issue. The patients usually present at an advanced stage due to the lack of awareness and poor socioeconomic status. The site of male breast cancer is usually the central region, and nipple involvement is more common. Although the management of male breast cancers is almost similar to female breast cancers, the prognosis is very poor in males when compared to females. Long-standing breast lesions in males should not be ignored else it leads to delay in the diagnosis. As surgery is very challenging in the male breast because of a paucity of breast lesion, there is an urgent need for trials for the most effective treatment in men with breast cancer. Postmastectomy chemotherapy and radiation therapy are usually given to decrease recurrence along with adjuvant hormonal therapy which has an effect on increasing survival rates.
