Formulation and antioxidant activity of lip-balm enriched with brown seaweed Sargassum sp. extract

Abstract Lip balm serves as a lip moisturizer designed to nurture and safeguard the lips to promote their health. Seaweed, a natural component, possesses the potential to create antioxidant and UV-protective formulations in the realm of cosmetics. This research endeavors to ascertain the impact of incorporating brown seaweed extract from Sargassum sp . into lip balm formulations on their antioxidant and UV-protective properties. The lip balm formulations were developed in four concentrations: formulation 1, formulation 2, formulation 3, and formulation 4. Assessment encompassed antioxidant activity, UV-protection analysis, and a hedonic test. The outcomes revealed a direct correlation between the augmentation of Sargassum sp. extract and heightened antioxidant and UV-protective efficacy, albeit at the expense of reduced consumer approval. Consequently, the lip balm formulations demonstrated enhanced antioxidant and UV-protective attributes.
