Vulnerability of river-based community: living on and living from the lanting house in South Kalimantan

Abstract Communities in river-based areas are disproportionately experiencing greater losses due to their heightened vulnerability caused by natural disasters and man-made factors. River-based communities face a range of vulnerabilities due to their proximity to water bodies, including physical, social, economic, and environmental vulnerability. Vulnerability can be stimulated by the settlement conditions, as in the case of floating houses. This paper seeks to explore the life of lanting house, a type of floating house in the Barito River Basin Area, South Kalimantan, which has an urban character. This paper uses qualitative methods to explore vulnerability in communities living in lanting houses. The results of a literature review of community life in floating houses also strengthen the results of field observations and interviews with the snowball approach. From the field findings, we obtained the form of non-homogeneous vulnerability conditions based on the utilization of lanting houses as settlements which concludes our study that settlement can trigger river-based community’s vulnerability.
