Development and Validation of Stroke Wellbeing and Assessment Measure Scale: A Pharmaceutical Approach to Assess Poststroke Quality of Life
Background: Stroke survivors face a range of physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges that impact their quality of life (QoL). Existing stroke-specific QoL measures are often criticized for their length, inconsistent validity, and narrow focus. To bridge this gap this study aims to develop and validate SWAM scale, to assess the QOL of post stroke patients. Aims and Objectives: To create, validate, and assess the quality of life of stroke survivors using the SWAM scale. Settings and Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted over 6 months at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital, a multispecialty tertiary care teaching hospital involving 108 participants. Methods and Materials: The SWAM scale was developed through a standardized protocol, including literature review, target group selection, group discussion, and expert validation from the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Neurology. Results: The SWAM scale's initial 35 components were trimmed to 30 items. Significant associations (p < 0.05) were found between the Pharmaceutical Care domain and psychological characteristics, suggesting that tailored treatments targeted at patient responsiveness and orientation may improve therapeutic outcomes. Conclusions: The SWAM scale offers a comprehensive view of stroke patients’ health, enabling better treatment, better decision-making, and useful data for clinical practice and research.
