A Simulation Computer Model for Evaluating and Testing the Consistency of Information and Functional Elements of Graphical User Interfaces

The purpose of the study is to improve the performance of the users of software products with graphical user interfaces. The studies of such disciplines as visual aesthetics, human-computer interaction, gestalt psychology, neuroaesthetics, perceptual psychology, and ergonomics were analyzed, and the regularities relating to optimal coordination of information and functional elements of graphical user interfaces have been identified and systematized based on the obtained analysis results. A further synthesis of the obtained data with the results of the research performed by the author opened the possibility to develop scientific, methodological and instrumental means for assessing the consistency of information and functional elements of graphical user interfaces. The interface loads affecting the user during the working day when using software products have been determined, as well as their composition in the form of spectra of indicators for assessing the consistency of information and functional elements of interfaces. Analytical models of cognitive, visual and motor loads affecting the users of software products have been built. An original formula for assessing the performance of users in computer programs is proposed. A simulation computer model for assessing and testing the consistency of information and functional elements of graphical user interfaces has been implemented, using which real-time tracking of changes in cognitive, visual, and motor loads can be performed when changing the values of user model and interface characteristics. The model also helps automate the process of assessing and comparing interfaces with similar functional content and purpose to select the most suitable software product. The results obtained can be used by software developers when testing software products to identify defects and subsequently eliminate them. The research results can also be used to select and justify a certain software product from a variety of similar ones in functional area and purpose in terms of achieving higher user performance in the selected product. Thus, the scientific, methodological and instrumental means presented in the article allow assessing and testing software product interfaces in terms of consistency of their information and functional elements.
