An Exploration of Instructional Strategies for Cultivating Students’ Viewing Skill through Textbook Illustrations in Junior High School English Education—A Case Study of the Compulsory Grade 7 English Curriculum in the 2024 PEP Edition

看能力作为新课标新增的语言技能，是英语学科核心素养的关键能力。初中英语教材具有丰富的图像资源，对学生的看能力提出了发展要求。本研究从看能力的视角出发，对人教版七年级英语新教材中的图像资源进行分析，从识别、理解、评价、运用四个层面探究新教材如何对学生的看能力进行培养，并提出分层教学策略。对于图像的识别，学生需学会对图片、地图、文字符号的理解分析；对于图像的理解，学生需利用图文信息深入解读语篇、利用主题语境预测文本内容；对于图像的评价，学生可从文化意识、情感态度层面鉴赏和感受图像深意；对于图像的运用，学生可通过整合信息和分析图片，培养跨学科意识和思维品质。本研究希冀为教师培养学生的看能力提供有益见解，助力初中英语教学。 Viewing skill, as a newly introduced language competence in the curriculum standards, is critical to English subject core competencies. Junior high school English textbooks, rich in illustrative resources, impose developmental demands on students’ viewing skills. This study, from the perspective of viewing skill, analyzes the illustrative resources of the new Grade 7 PEP English textbook. It explores how the new textbook cultivates students’ viewing skills across four dimensions: identification, comprehension, evaluation, and application, and proposes stratified teaching strategies. For image identification, students must learn to interpret pictures, maps, and textual symbols. For image comprehension, they should use textual and graphical information to deeply interpret texts and predict content based on thematic contexts. For image evaluation, they need to appreciate and sense the deeper meanings of images from cultural and emotional perspectives. For image application, they can integrate information and analyze pictures to develop cross-disciplinary awareness and thinking qualities. This study aims to offer valuable insights for teachers in cultivating students’ viewing skill, contributing to junior high school English teaching.
