Holoptelea integrifolia (Roxb.) Planch: A Potential Plant for Sports Nutrition and Medicine

Holoptelea integrifolia (Ulmaceae) is a medicinal plant being used to treat a wide range of human ailments including leprosy, inflammation, eczema, malaria, rickets, leucoderma, scabies, rheumatism, ringworm, malaria, chronic wounds, and intestinal cancer. Tribal communities of India use its fruits to complete their nutritional needs and treat various diseases. Holoptelea integrifolia seeds contain a high amount of fat (49.86 ± 0.73 gm/100 gm), protein (23.57 ± 0.42 gm/100 gm), carbohydrate (19.56 ± 1.32 gm/100 gm) making its calorific value about 604.26 ± 2.73 kcal/100 gm, alongwith a reasonable amount of crude fiber (4.25 ± 0.48 gm/100 gm) and minerals. H. integrifolia also shows pharmacological activity such as antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, wound healing, analgesic, and hypolipidemic activity. These activities can play an important role in sports nutrition and enhance the performance of athletes. H. integrifolia can be a potential sports supplement and medicine to improve athlete’s performance. This review aims to look for novel herbal supplements and medicines for athletes based on traditional and pharmacological uses of the Holoptelea integrifolia plant and make it a probable dietary source for performance enhancement and health benefits.
