CORRELATION OF VITAMIN D LEVELS AND LIPID PROFILE IN CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE

Background: Vitamin D deciency is increasingly implicated in cardiovascular risk, yet its association with coronary artery disease (CAD) and lipid prole remains ambiguous. This study aims to assess the relationship between serum vitamin D levels, lipid prole, and the angiographic pattern of CAD. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted over 18 months among 50 patients undergoing coronary angiography at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore. Serum vitamin D and lipid parameters (TC, HDL, LDL, VLDL, TG) were measured. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, Pearson correlation, ROC curves, and Fisher's exact test. Results: The mean age was 60 years; 70% were male. Vitamin D deciency was present in 64% of patients. Signicant associations were noted between low vitamin D levels and triple vessel disease. HDL was signicantly lower in all CAD subgroups compared to normals (P<0.001). LDL and VLDL were signicantly elevated in triple vessel disease (P<0.001). ROC analysis showed excellent predictive ability of LDL (AUC 0.98), VLDL (AUC 1.00), and HDL (AUC 0.94) for CAD severity. Conclusion: Lower vitamin D levels and dyslipidemia (especially low HDL and high LDL/VLDL) are signicantly associated with CAD severity. These ndings suggest a potential role for vitamin D status in cardiovascular risk stratication.
