Identification of marine mesoscale eddy fine structure based on satellite synthetic aperture radar data

Oceanic mesoscale eddies have important impacts on ocean circulation, ocean energy balance, climate change, and marine ecosystems and environments. Accurate identification and analysis of the fine structure of these eddies are of great significance for marine ecological protection and disaster warning. The traditional observation methods have limitations in resolution and accuracy, especially in the observation of sub-mesoscale structures, which are difficult to satisfy the demand. For this reason, this study proposes a new method based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data and wide-margin interferometric altimeter (SWOT) data aimed at accurately observing the fine structure of oceanic mesoscale eddies. The study was conducted to localize mesoscale eddies by means of traditional altimeter data, and to analyze the submesoscale fine structure around the eddies and their dynamics by using high-resolution SAR and SWOT data. By fusing SAR and SWOT data and combining them with traditional altimeters for data superposition, the observation accuracy of mesoscale eddies has been effectively improved, and significant progress has been made especially in the observation of dynamics and details. The results show that the method can accurately identify the static and dynamic features of eddies, which provides a new idea for the study of the fine structure of mesoscale eddies, and also provides more accurate technical support for marine disaster warning, climate change monitoring and marine ecological protection.
