Reconsiderations: Blank’s Critical Essays on Thornton Wilder, Martin Blank, ed. Critical Essays on Thornton Wilder. New York: G. K. Hall, 1996.
Abstract This 1996 collection, edited by Martin Blank, with articles dating back decades, remains a superb introduction to Thornton Wilder. Because of recent publications, many articles included would benefit from modification or clarification. Edmund Wilson’s 1928 contribution details Proust’s impact on Wilder, but Wilson quotes Wilder inaccurately and provides the wrong context from Proust. Malcolm Cowley’s essay, “The Man Who Abolished Time,” continues to be a classic, providing an enduring description of Wilder. Some essays emphasize specific literary movements, styles, or influences; whatever Wilder adopted, however, he made it his own.
