Integrating Renewables: Insights from Global Pumped Hydro Storage Case Studies
The increasing integration of renewable energy (RE) sources, such as solar and wind, into the power grid presents unique challenges to grid stability and reliability due to their intermittent and variable nature. The paper examines the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources (IRES) with pumped hydro storage (PHS) to enhance grid stability and reliability. Through a detailed analysis of multiple case studie including Japan's advanced synchronous PHS, the Huanghe Hydropower Golmud Solar Park in China, and solar-PHS integration efforts in Cyprus and the Faroe Islands key metrics such as energy storage efficiency, capacity factors, and curtailment rates were evaluated. The findings reveal that Japan and China exemplify successful models, demonstrating high energy storage efficiency and minimal curtailment rates, thereby achieving significant carbon emissions reductions and robust grid stability. Conversely, Cyprus faced challenges due to lower capacity and efficiency in its PHS facilities, highlighting barriers to effective integration. The paper discusses the broader implications for renewable energy deployment, emphasizing the necessity for supportive policies, technological innovations, and investments in infrastructure. Recommendations for future research areas, including advancements in energy storage technologies and grid modernization efforts, are also presented. This study underscores the vital role of IRES and PHS integration in promoting sustainable power systems and achieving energy transition goals.
