A 32 Gb/s Burst-Mode Transimpedance Amplifier With 2.625 ns Reconfiguration Time for All-Optical Network Switching
This paper presents a 32 Gb/s burst-mode (BM) transimpedance amplifier (TIA) designed for all-optical network switching applications. A quasi-synchronized DC comparison technique with 1/6-rate sampling clock scheme is proposed to achieve fast settling. In addition, a synchronization trimming scheme is designed in the reconfiguration logic to enable fast alignment between the START signal from the transmitter or the controller and the beginning of the preamble bursts. Fabricated in a 28-nm CMOS process, the BM-TIA achieves -3 dB bandwidth of 20 GHz, with 10 dB gain dynamic range. The BM-TIA operates at 32 Gb/s with a power consumption of 77.8 mW from a 0.9-V supply. Wire-bonded to a commercial PIN photodiode (PD) with 0.8 A/W responsivity at 1310 nm, the TIA demonstrates a measured sensitivity of -11 dBm at a bit-error-rate (BER) of 10-12. This work achieves the shortest reconfiguration time of 2.625 ns at data rate beyond 25 Gb/s.
