In Memoriam: Fredric Jameson (1934–2024)

We note the passing, on September 22, 2024, of the seminal literary critic Fredric Jameson. While he was a member of the editorial board for several years, he only published twice in these pages. His “On Balzac,” from 1983, offered a response to Samuel Weber's first book (a Marxist-Lacanian account of the early Balzac and, as such, the book that Jameson was born to review). Eight years later, his “Soseki and Western Modernism” gave an account of the great Japanese novelist who died in 1916, the same year as Henry James and Jack London. Both of these essays were exemplary of Jameson's critical breadth and careful engagement.
