AI/ML-Based Safety Monitoring System for Offshore Drilling Rigs: Enhancing Safety, Compliance and Operational Efficiency
Abstract The offshore drilling industry continuously seeks innovative technologies to enhance crew safety and operational performance due to the complex operational tasks and hazards present. Aramco Rowan Drilling (ARO Drilling) established a dedicated ARO Behavior Centre (ABC) at its headquarters, aimed at proactively reshaping offshore operational behaviors through centralized Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) monitoring, active intervention using Stop Work Authority (SWA), and systematic analysis of observed behaviors. To enhance ABC capabilities, we implemented an advanced Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) based safety monitoring system specifically tailored for offshore jack-up rigs. This system integrates advanced computer vision analytics and Internet of Things (IoT) devices for continuous real-time monitoring, improving the detection of unsafe behaviors and conditions, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) non-compliance, unauthorized red zone entries, housekeeping deficiencies and line of fire exposures. A comprehensive evaluation process was conducted, encompassing multiple technological solutions including visual analytics through smart cameras and wearable geofencing devices. Selected technologies underwent rigorous proof-of-concept tests to assess their feasibility and effectiveness in diverse offshore operational scenarios. Implementation results demonstrate tangible improvements in hazard detection, reduced unauthorized access incidents, and enhanced compliance with defined safety protocols. Specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were developed, establishing measurable benchmarks for personnel exposure risk within dynamic red zones. This paper documents ARO Drilling's comprehensive approach to establishing the ABC and integrating AI/ML-driven technologies, highlighting significant operational safety improvements and providing foundational insights for industry-wide safety management innovations.
