Global Record Completion Including 12 Zone Intelligent Completion, Fiber Optic Sensing, and Chemical Tracers
Abstract A completion design solution to manage a high water cut reservoir offshore Abu Dhabi was developed to include surface-controlled flow valves installed in several compartments along a long lateral. The design also included distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) along with chemical tracers to minimize well intervention cost, monitor the production profile along the lateral, and assess stimulation effectiveness. The design was developed specifically to curtail water encroachment. A multifunctional team designed the compartmentalization and choke setting of the Inflow Control Valves (ICV) stations, as well as location and quantity of chemical tracer subs to expand resolution of production characteristics of the well. Execution planning and design involved optimizing the well trajectory and zonal targets through multiple iterations to balance placement of the lateral to maximize the chance of successfully deploying the intelligent completion to target depth. A single string smart completion was planned with electro-hydraulic ICVs that provided the ability to control reservoir contribution along lateral from surface and enable remote sensing of water production. The innovative and global record setting completion design allows for a more data-driven and sustainable method of oil production to drive asset value. This intelligent completion was designed to meet requirements for remote well sensing and water production mitigation in a 10k-ft maximum reservoir contact (MRC) lateral to TD of 21,548ft. The completion had many global records including 12 compartments with electro-hydraulic ICVs, 24 chemical tracers with unique signatures, 2 fiber optic lines for DFOS capability in reservoir, control line severance tool, delay swell control feed-through swell packers, swivel joints, low-drag insert clamps and an electronic pressure-temperature gauge with anchor. Design improvements, multiple SITs at vendors facility, load modelling during installation and life cycle, tight clearance checks and lessons from other global completions were captured in the pre-execution reviews. The completion was successfully installed to total well depth and has been confirmed fully functional and meeting all Field Development requirements to optimize sweep and minimize operating costs. Well tests conducted demonstrated the capability to clean-out individual compartments, provided two phase production profile and estimated contribution of each compartment in the lateral. Subsequently this allowed optimizing oil production and shutting off the high water cut compartments. Learnings from this pilot are used to optimize reservoir development strategy for future designs. The DFOS capabilities of this completion will allow for substantial data to be collected and analyzed. ADNOC R&D and concession holder intends to evaluate and build algorithms to help translate temperature and acoustic surveillance into production profiling trends. Data from DFOS and tracers will reduce future well interventions, including associated cost and GHG emissions associated with the work, for production logging in the future.
