Effective Implementation of the Cemented Tie Back Scab Liner Hanger System in the United Arab Emirates

Abstract The cemented tie back scab liner hanger system represents a significant advancement in well construction and remediation technology, particularly in addressing casing integrity challenges in both new and mature wells. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the first field trial of this innovative system in an ADNOC onshore field in the United Arab Emirates. The system was deployed to remediate a casing leak in a horizontal producer well targeting the Thamama reservoir, a carbonate formation with high porosity and permeability. By minimizing material usage and operational complexities, the cemented tie back scab liner hanger system aligns with ADNOC's broader strategy to optimize well construction and maintenance costs. The reduction in rig time, coupled with improved well integrity, makes this an attractive solution for addressing casing issues in workover and newly drilled wells. The ability to deploy this system across different well types and formations demonstrates its versatility and adaptability. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the system's design, installation, and performance, highlighting its cost efficiency, operational flexibility, and well integrity enhancement. The successful field trial demonstrates the system's capability to restore casing integrity while preserving future well intervention options. The paper also outlines potential areas for further optimization, including modifications to liner hanger design, cementing techniques, and advanced monitoring systems for long-term well performance.
