Immunological insights into atopic dermatitis and the efficacy of plant-based interventions

Atopic dermatitis affects about 2-3% of population worldwide. It is a chronic disease with characteristics of itchiness excessive dry skin, and rashes. Manifestation is one of the most serious conditions in the world as it is caused by genetic and environmental factors that compromise the integrity of the skin barrier and make it more vulnerable to wider penetration by different allergens and pathogens. This can worsen the condition and even cause fatal hypersensitivity reactions. The use of synthetic medications is fraught with the most severe side effects and persistent negative impacts. According to the literature available free fatty acids, sterols, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, and other chemicals with different chemical configurations are found in medicinal plants. Alkaloids are employed because they are intended to modify diseased situations. This article discusses how inflammation and other immunological pathways are responsible and how to modulate those using different medicinal plants to fight against atopic dermatitis.
