In Situ Preparation of Plum Pudding Structured <scp>PC</scp>‐<scp>TiO2</scp> Scattering Particles for <scp>PP</scp>‐Based Light Diffusing Materials With Enhanced Scattering Ability and <scp>UV</scp> Shielding Effect

ABSTRACT A polypropylene (PP)‐based light diffusing material with good optical properties was prepared through an in situ blending method, which contained polycarbonate (PC)‐titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) scattering particles with a plum pudding structure. By studying the selective distribution of TiO 2 and morphological evolution of the PC‐TiO 2 dispersed phase during the blending process, it became clear that the formation process of PC‐TiO 2 particles had different stages, corresponding to changes in optical properties. A blending time of 12 min was found to be optimal, with the material's haze exceeding 90% and the transmittance remaining over 70%. At this point, the uniform dispersion of particles was beneficial for the scattering effect while limiting the enrichment of TiO 2 on the PC phase surface to reduce reflection, which was conducive to maintaining higher transmittance. In addition, the plum pudding structure promoted the multiple scattering of TiO 2 within the scattering particles, enhancing the scattering range. The introduction of TiO 2 also improved the UV shielding performance and thermal stability of the composites. The distribution of modified TiO 2 further reinforced the interaction between the PP matrix and PC‐TiO 2 phase, thereby preserving high tensile strength. This work provided new insights for the performance enhancement and functional design of light diffusing materials.
