Alla ricerca della Salmonella...
Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serovar typhi, is a potentially severe systemic infection, especially in endemic regions with poor sanitation. The paper reports the case of a 12-year-old girl returning from Pakistan with prolonged fever and gastrointestinal symptoms. Despite negative blood and stool cultures, diagnosis was confirmed by Widal-Wright serology and stool film-array testing. Given the high prevalence of multidrug-resistant strains in the region, empirical therapy with meropenem was initiated and showed clinical improvement. This case highlights the importance of integrated clinical assessment and the role of alternative diagnostic tools when conventional microbiological tests are negative.
