Photonic integrated circuits for microwave photonics in a 300-mm silicon photonics foundry

Microwave photonics is a mature optical alternative to analog radio-frequency processing, primarily relying on low-loss fiber-optic components for filtering, modulation, transmission, and detection. The next generation of microwave photonic systems will take advantage of silicon photonics, leveraging this technology’s superior phase stability, ease of thermal management, robust foundry-based manufacturing, enhanced scalability, and decreased size, weight, and power. We describe our work on the design and measurement of several low-loss passive and active waveguide components designed for on-chip optical processing of radio-frequency signals, including edge couplers, arrayed waveguide gratings, delay lines, carrier and sideband filters, and tunable true-time delay architectures.
