Media globalisation and the increasing consumerist trend: a descriptive analytical
An observer of prevailing social conditions realises that globalisation has taken on many dimensions. Although it initially emerged in economics, it has expanded into other areas, such as the cultural dimension, known as "cultural globalisation," which promotes the spread of Western culture in our society and the dominance of Western lifestyles. This is evident in the widespread phenomenon of "consumerism," which has begun to take a distinct trajectory, especially with the emergence of social media networks. These networks have begun to influence the social structure of human societies in general, and Algerian society is one of the communities where these cultural elements have spread. This study aims to understand, describe, and analyse the cultural dimension of globalisation and its role in the emergence and growth of consumerism in Algerian society. This study aims to analyse the impact of cultural globalisation on the rise of consumerism in Algerian society and provide suggestions and recommendations to mitigate the effects of this widespread behaviour. It first explores the concept of cultural globalisation and then examines its manifestations and the role that consumerism plays as a key manifestation of this cultural dimension. The study will adopt a descriptive‒analytical approach to understand how these elements influence societal behaviours. Finally, this study offers practical recommendations to reduce the negative consequences of this trend in society.
