Association of sleep disorders with APOE gene polymorphisms among the residents aged 25—64 years of the Novosibirsk city: WHO «MONICA psychosocial study»

Objective. To study the associations of polymorphic variant of the APOE gene coding part with sleep disorders in residents of Novosibirsk aged 25—64 years. Materials and methods. A random representative sample from the open population of residents aged 25—64 years of the Oktyabrsky district of Novosibirsk was surveyed (403 men, mean age 34±0.4 years, response — 71%; 531 women, mean age 35±0.4 years, response — 72%) within the framework of the III screening of the WHO «MONICA — psychosocial study» program. The study was carried out in the frame of the FWNR-2024-000 budgetary theme. Results. Sleep disorders have been found in 17.8% of the examined people aged 25—64 years (15.7% slept poorly and 2.1% — very bad). The probability of poor sleep self-assessment has been increased by 3.9 (95% CI 1.889—8.072) times in carriers of ε3/ε4 genotype of APOE gene compared to carriers of ε3/ε3 genotype, who more often evaluated sleep as good. Individuals whose genotype contained ε4 allele (ε2/ε4+ε3/ε4+ε4/ε4 genotypes) rated their sleep as bad 3.9 times more often compared with carriers of ε2/ε3+ε3/ε3 genotypes, in whom a positive sleep self-assessment prevailed. Bad sleep has been found more often in the respondents carrying ε4 allele of APOE gene than in those with ε2 allele and ε3 allele. Conclusion. The obtained data show that ε4 allele of APOE gene is associated with sleep disorders.
