Triglycerides-Glucose Index as an integral biomarker of insulin resistance and cardiovascular diseases

Given the growing number of people with insulin resistance and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), it is necessary to search for and justify the use of markers of these conditions to identify cardiometabolic risk factors as early as possible, as well as to treat and rehabilitate patients. The triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) can be considered an integral marker of insulin resistance and a CVD predictor. Objective of the review. To review the use of the triglyceride-glucose index in scientific research as an integral biomarker of insulin resistance and a predictor of cardiovascular diseases. Materials and methods. Sources for the review article were searched and selected in the scientific databases eLibrary.ru, Link.Springer.com, PubMed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Results. Several large studies have demonstrated that the TyG index can be regarded as a predictor of CVD development and used for the early detection of patients at high CVD risk. Among the biomarkers for CVD prediction in patients with type 2 diabetes, the TyG index showed a high predictive value with moderate significance and high reliability. This index can be considered an indicator of the severity of carbohydrate metabolism disorders and, in general, of cardiometabolic risk. Conclusion. The TyG index is a simple and convenient tool for assessing insulin resistance. It is a promising tool that can improve the early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, but a deeper study of its properties and performance is needed.
