Organophosphorus-Functionalized Hyperbranched Polyethylene Additive for Flame-Retardant Thermally Conductive Boron Nitride Nanosheet/Epoxy Adhesives

Despite the considerable progress on thermally conductive adhesives (TCAs), it remains a challenge to produce high-performance, flame-retardant TCAs that simultaneously possess excellent bonding, thermal conductivity (TC), and flame-retardant performance. We herein demonstrate a strategy for producing high-performance, flame-retardant TCAs from boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) based on the noncovalent but steady adsorption of a designer organophosphorus-functionalized hyperbranched polyethylene (PE), HBPE@DOPA, onto the latter. The copolymer can be synthesized via Pd-diimine-catalyzed chain walking ethylene copolymerization under mild conditions through a simple one-pot process. As a stabilizer, the copolymer can be irreversibly adsorbed onto BNNSs based on the cooperative noncovalent CH–π and π–π interactions, which has been confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations and the results from thermogravimetric analyses. This results in efficient exfoliation of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in common organic solvents to concurrently render the HBPE@DOPA-functionalized BNNSs, which are well dispersible in epoxy resin with strong interfacial interactions due to the formation of hydrogen bonds. This allows us to obtain BNNS/epoxy composite adhesives with both excellent bonding and heat conduction performances. Meanwhile, the HBPE@DOPA adsorbed onto BNNSs can effectively improve the flame-retardant performance of resultant adhesives based on a synergistic effect mechanism.
