Understanding Creativity in an Inter-Intelligence World

Like many across the Leosphere, I am increasingly faced with and fascinated by questions of how creativity will evolve in an “inter-intelligent” world. The notion of inter-intelligence aims to capture a sense of coexistence and mutual emergence. Rather than succumb to fears of AI replacing us, let’s consider how inter-intelligence opens new apertures on what it means to be creative and what it means to be human. What might creativity become when humans no longer imagine alone? As artificial intelligence joins the creative conversation as a co-thinker and co-maker, we are both unsettled and intrigued. To reflect on this, I asked AI to explore with me how this disorientation might offer a reorientation. This mirroring reveals what we reach for—beauty, coherence, provocation—and what we overlook. In cocreating with AI, we confront ourselves, our assumptions, and the choices we don’t even know we are making. AI as muse also offers insight: we find inspiration in an unexpected phrase or line, a shift in rhythm, not because it’s better, but because it invites opportunity to think or feel differently. This “unfolding choreography” is not always elegant. But then the tempo changes, and AI pulls you into flow with unexpected grace. Especially when the aim is exploration, not just efficiency, we can stretch the boundaries of what we understand creativity to be, elevating it from individual genius into a relational practice, shaped by dialogue, curiosity, and care.Human creative expression is more than output; it is practice, process, inquiry, and iteration, as much or more than any product. It’s how we metabolize experience, reach for meaning across time, and strive to make a difference. In an inter-intelligent world, what remains special about human creativity is what we humans choose to do: to feel, to connect, to care, to create with conscience and context. This is both an invitation and a responsibility. Let’s rise to the occasion, becoming more human and more humane as we shape and embrace an emergent, inter-intelligent creative ecosystem.
