Environmental and socioeconomic contributions of the forestry sector to Brazil

The Brazilian forestry sector plays a strategic role in the country’s environmental and economic agenda, standing out for its carbon sequestration potential and provision of renewable raw materials. The expansion of planted forests, combined with the adoption of sustainable practices and international certifications, enhances competitiveness and contributes to job creation and regional development. This study provides an in-depth analysis of the Brazilian forestry sector, highlighting its environmental, social, and economic contributions in an integrated manner. The methodology adopted consisted of a systematic literature review and document analysis, covering scientific publications and sectoral reports from 2000 to 2024, which allowed for a comprehensive overview of the sector's trends and developments. The results reveal significant growth in planted forest areas, reaching approximately 9.94 million hectares in 2022, with eucalyptus (76%) and pine (19%) as the predominant species. Brazil has approximately 8.7 million hectares certified by the FSC, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable forest management practices and alignment with international standards. The sector also stands out for the valorization of forest residues, which are increasingly being used in the production of biofuels, bioenergy, and bioproducts, driving the circular economy and technological innovation. In the socioeconomic dimension, the sector generated around 2.6 million direct and indirect jobs in 2022, promoting regional development and social inclusion, especially in rural areas. Despite the progress, challenges remain, such as the regional concentration of certified areas and the need to increase the participation of small producers and traditional communities. It is concluded that the Brazilian forestry sector holds significant potential for sustainable growth, establishing itself as a strategic pillar for the bioeconomy, decarbonization, and the country’s socioeconomic development.
