Correlation of fractographic dimple geometry with microstructural and mechanical properties of an ultrahigh-strength steel

Abstract The quantitative measurements of two-dimensional micro/nano-layered dimples’ geometry on the series of published tensile fractographs of ultra-high-strength low-carbon martensitic steels differentially treated in galvanizing lines have been done and correlated with its corresponding microstructural entities and tensile properties as a function of tempering parameter ( P ). It has been investigated that dimple size has approximately similar trends with strength properties (both decreasing with P ) and inverse trends with ductility properties (ductility increasing with P ) as a function of P . This study will help the failure analyst for quality control. Graphical abstract
