NOVEL MATERIALS IN PARTICLE PHYSICS EXPERIMENTS WITH HL-LHC AT CERN

The High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) represents a major upgrade to the LHC increasing particle collision rates to 200 per bunch crossing, aiming to increase integrated luminosity by a factor of ten to expand the discovery potential of CERN’s experimental physics program that will last well into 2030s. Achieving the ambitious performance goals of the HL-LHC places unprecedented demands on the materials used in the accelerator infrastructure. To meet the demanding conditions of the HL-LHC—such as extreme radiation levels, higher data rates, and tighter spatial constraints—requires the development and integration of novel materials across particle detector systems that need upgrade. This talk will provide an overview of cutting-edge materials research supporting HL-LHC and detectors upgrades, including advanced superconductors for high-field magnets, radiation-hard silicon for tracking detectors, ultra-lightweight carbon composites for mechanical supports, and new scintillating and photonic materials. Emphasis will be given to the interdisciplinary efforts driving these innovations, as well as their implications on performance, longevity, and future applications in high-energy physics.
