Phase angle variation and cellular hydration associated with GSTP1 gene polymorphisms in women with breast cancer
Abstract Breast cancer (BC) is one of the leading causes of women mortality worldwide. Various risk factors, such as lifestyle, obesity, alcoholism, and genetic predisposition, can influence its development. Interestingly, the glutathione S-transferase Pi 1 ( GSTP1 ) gene plays a crucial role in cellular detoxification and regulation of oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between body composition and GSTP1 Ile105Val variants in women with BC. Body composition was assessed by electrical bioimpedance and GSTP1 Ile105Val variants were determined by qPCR. The results showed significant differences in phase angle (PA), fat-free hydration (FFH), intracellular water (ICW) and extracellular water (ECW) levels in patients with BC according to their GSTP 1 variant. In particular, these GSTP1 variants were associated with increased FFH and reduction of PA, ICW and ECW. These findings suggest that the GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphisms might be related to alterations in water balance and edema in patients with BC.
