Venous thromboembolic disease in pregnancy and postpartum: Diagnosis, management, and prophylaxis
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a potentially preventable condition affecting 1.2 per 1,000 births, with the potential for significant maternal morbidity and mortality. Diagnostic and management considerations for VTE in pregnant patients differ in several ways compared to the nonpregnant population. Furthermore, peripartum management of anticoagulation requires multidisciplinary input from various care providers. Timely assessments of thrombotic risk and initiation of thromboprophylaxis can further reduce the incidence of VTE.
