Design fluorinated copolymer coating used for long-lasting protection of ancient book
Ancient books are stored for extended periods to experience severe aging, showing low stability and high brittleness. Here, poly(tert-butyl methacrylate-dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate) was prepared using free radical polymerisation to safeguard the surface of ancient book paper. The polymer coating was constructed on the surface of ancient book paper by spraying 2-butanone/poly(tert-butyl methacrylate-dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate) mixed solution. Compared to pristine water-absorbing ancient book paper, the modified ancient book paper demonstrates high flexibility, moisture resistance, and high hydrophobicity. Surface roughness of modified paper fibres was significantly improved, and fibre surface was completely covered by F element. Surface water contact angle of modified ancient book paper was 153°, while the original paper surface was highly hydrophilic. Hydrophobicity and anti-pollution performance of modified ancient book paper surface were enhanced. The work novelty is a synergy between rigid poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) and flexible poly(dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate) in the coating. This work paves a road for non-destructive long-term hydrophobic protection for the surface of ancient book paper.
