<scp>3D</scp> Printing and Compressive Properties of Continuous Fibers Negative Poisson's Ratio Rotary Structures

ABSTRACT To explore the impact of continuous fibers on the energy absorption properties and failure mechanisms of negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) rotary structures, a high‐performance integrated manufacturing process for NPR rotary structures incorporating continuous fibers‐reinforced composites (CFRCs) was developed. Continuous fibers are precisely printed on rotating surfaces utilizing a fused deposition method (FDM), in which continuous fibers have been mixed with a thermoplastic matrix and extruded from a nozzle. Additionally, a path‐planning strategy based on the layering of column surfaces is implemented to ensure a controlled distribution of continuous fibers across the rotary surface. The specimens were prepared by a continuous fiber composites rotary 3D printer to investigate the impact of various structural parameters on the energy absorption capacity of continuous fibers NPR rotary structures. Load–displacement curves are derived from quasi‐static compression tests to investigate failure modes, initial peak loads, and energy absorption. Compared to pure PLA, the expansion of cracks within the PLA matrix is greatly prevented by the incorporation of continuous fibers. Moreover, the incorporation of continuous fibers led to a significant enhancement in energy absorption of 70.4%, although the mass increased by only 28.2%. The proposed 3D printing technology, characterized by its capability to precisely control fiber orientation and distribution on curved surfaces, holds significant promise for the automated production of lightweight, continuous fiber composite structures with intricate mesh designs.
