SURFACE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF FOLD AND THRUST BELT OF POONCH AND MIRPUR AREAS, SUB HIMALAYAS, AZAD KASHMIR, PAKISTAN
The Poonch and Mirpur areas of Kashmir are placed in the Himalayan fold and thrust belt northeast Pakistan which investigated for surface structural analysis. The Himalayan fold and thrust belt are the result of the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. The Himalayas are generally divided into four parts by 1) Tethyan Himalayas, 2) Greater Himalayas, 3) Lesser Himalayas and 4) Sub Himalayas. The investigated area is a part of Sub and Lesser Himalayas. The area represents cover sequence of the Indian plate consists of Late Proterozoic to Cenozoic sedimentary and low grade metamorphic rocks. The cover sequence shows the thin skinned tectonic style of deformation above the crystalline basement of the Indian plate. The cover sequence is multiply deformed. It has undergone intense deformation and shortening which produced southwest directed reverse and thrust faults and southwest vergent folds. The surface geometry of folds are mostly asymmetrical but symmetrical at places with open to gentle in nature.
