Morbid Jealousy in Alcohol Dependence: A Cross-sectional Study in Hospital-admitted Patients at a Rural Tertiary Health Center
Abstract Background: Morbid jealousy (MJ) is a challenging psychological condition associated with significant distress and potential harm. This study aims to explore the determinants of MJ in patients with alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS), focusing on its correlation with sociodemographic variables, drinking patterns and severity, sexual dysfunction, and couple satisfaction. Methodology: Adult patients diagnosed with ADS and in a heterosexual relationship were included in the study. MJ was assessed using operational criteria, and psychometric scales were used to measure alcohol dependence severity, couple satisfaction, and sexual dysfunction. Statistical analysis included descriptive measures and Mann–Whitney U -test to study the association of quantitative variables with MJ. Results: A response rate of 79.4% was achieved, with 38.8% of participants exhibiting MJ. Factors significantly associated with MJ included higher quantity of alcohol consumption, greater severity of alcohol dependence, and lower couple satisfaction. Sexual dysfunction did not show a significant association with MJ. Conclusion: MJ is highly prevalent among patients with ADS and is linked to specific psychological and clinical factors. Clinicians should consider these factors when assessing and treating patients with alcohol dependence to provide comprehensive care.
