Bioimpedance Analysis of Human Body Composition is an Auxiliary Method for Diagnostic of Malnutrition and Evaluating the Effectiveness of Perioperative Nutritional Support in a Patient with a Gastric Cancer

Aim. To describe the changes in the parameters of bioimpedance analysis of body composition of the patient with a gastric cancer as a result of individually selected perioperative nutritional support. Key points. Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, gastric cancer remains one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Malnutrition in upper gastrointestinal cancer patients is up to 60.2%, affects survival and quality of life, however, it can be often undiagnosed or diagnosed at the late stage. Nutritional status assessment is carried out using numerous methods, including assessment of anthropometric parameters, questionnaire scales, laboratory diagnostics, functional tests, instrumental examinations and special tests. Instrumental methods include the method of bioimpedance analysis of human body composition, which is increasingly being used in clinical practice, not only for diagnosis, but also for evaluating of quality nutritional support. Nutritional support has a positive effect on the outcomes of treatment in patients with malignant diseases. A clinical case of a patient with a gastric cancer shows the diagnosis of malnutrition, individually targeted perioperative nutritional support and the results of therapy, including changes in the indicators of bioimpedance analysis of body composition. Conclusion. The diagnostics of malnutrition must necessarily include screening and, if needed, following comprehensive examination (anthropometric, laboratory and instrumental). The use of bioimpedance analysis of body composition makes it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of perioperative nutritional therapy. Keywords: malnutrition, gastric cancer, bioimpedance, phase angle, perioperative nutritional support.
