Hematological values in healthy adult mixed-breed male dogs (Canis lupus familiaris Linnaeus, 1758) from Rolim de Moura city, Rondônia state – preliminary study

For the correct interpretation of complete blood counts (CBCs), standardization is required according to species, age, sex, breed, and especially geographic location, since geoclimatic conditions directly influence hematological parameters. Due to the lack of standardized hematological reference values in Rondônia, Brazil, this study aimed to standardize the hematological values of healthy adult mixed-breed male dogs from the Rolim de Moura city, Rondônia, Brazil, through a preliminary evaluation of hematological parameters in dogs undergoing surgical contraception. Preoperative hematological examinations of male dogs aged between 12 and 72 months undergoing bilateral orchiectomy were used. These procedures were performed in private veterinary clinics and the Small Animal Surgery Department at the Federal University of Rondônia, Rolim de Moura campus (RO), between January 2024 and December 2024. Data regarding erythrogram, leukogram, and platelet count from the dogs included in the study were organized in Excel® spreadsheets for further standardization. A completely randomized design was applied, with a factorial scheme (1 breed and 1 sex). For each hematological parameter analyzed, the mean and standard deviation were determined. A total of 77 preoperative CBCs were used from dogs with an average age of 44 months and average body weight of 15 kg. The results were presented in tables. It was concluded that this study provided preliminary standardized hematological reference values for healthy adult mixed-breed male dogs from Rolim de Moura, Rondônia, which may be used as a reference standard for the region.
