East enders: athletes’ villages and urban regeneration in Manchester, Glasgow and London
This project compares athletes’ villages in three Olympic and Commonwealth Games in the United Kingdom: Manchester 2002, Glasgow 2014 and London 2012. In each city, the athletes’ village was conceived as a residential anchor to regenerate blighted east ends beyond sport infrastructure. The comparison focuses on development motivations, planning and procurement process, finance, and legacy both within and beyond the athletes’ village. In addition to comparing intent and outcomes of villages from contemporaneous mega-events in the same country, the study identifies key considerations for village projects and legacy.
