Kresling origami structure: Geometric design principles and application research of foldable paper cups
Due to the kinematic behavior, excellent mechanical characteristics, design flexibility, reconfigurability, and multifunctionality, origami-inspired structures, and material systems have advanced viewed and considered in engineering and material sciences. It is usually used for aerospace, biomedical, construction, and packaging industries. Kresling is one of the most recognized and frequently observed forms of origami. Some of these peculiarities as, for instance, deployability, bistability, and linked extensional-rotational motion have attracted attention to a wide range of technical applications, in particular, in aeronautical structures. However, the majority of current Kresling research focuses on specific methodologies (e.g., using only the 2-D) pattern parameters or structures (e.g., connected modules), rather than offering a complete examination of the geometrical design of Kresling modules. Therefore, this report adopts a combination of theoretical analysis and solid modeling to comprehensively analyze the geometric design principles of Kresling origami structure and explore its application in the design of foldable paper cups.
