Optimization of fused depositon modeling printing time by optimizing printing parameters based on tensile test results

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is currently used in a wide range of domains. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is the most popular 3D printing technology due to its simplicity and the affordability of its machines. This technique is capable of producing both prototypes and functional parts, which is why many studies aim to determine the optimal printing parameters. In this paper, we conducted tensile tests to identify the optimal printing parameters for nine FDM printed specimens using the Taguchi method, which helps minimize the number of required specimens. We selected three levels for each of the following parameters: printing speed, layer thickness, and nozzle temperature. These parameters significantly affect the mechanical properties of FDM printed parts. We also developed an empirical model to predict the Youngs modulus as a function of the printing parameters based on the tensile test results.

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is the most popular 3D printing technology due to its simplicity and the affordability of its machines. We selected three levels for each of the following parameters: printing speed, layer thickness, and nozzle temperature. These parameters significantly affect the mechanical properties of FDM printed parts. We also developed an empirical model to predict the Youngs modulus as a function of the printing parameters based on the tensile test results.
