Sliding Mode Control for Grid-Connected PMSG Wind Turbines: Modeling, Simulation, and Performance Analysis

This paper presents the modeling, simulation, and control of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM). The focus is on implementing an advanced control strategy for both the machine-side and grid-side components to optimize system performance. Sliding Mode Control (SMC) has been evaluated for its capability in regulating rotor speed, electromagnetic torque, and grid current under varying wind and load conditions. The machine-side control ensures maximum power extraction by tracking the optimal tip-speed ratio, while the grid-side control maintains a stable DC-link voltage, minimizes harmonic distortion, and ensures compliance with grid standards. MATLAB/Simulink is employed to simulate the system and analyze the performance of the control techniques. The results demonstrate the superior stability, efficiency, and reliability of the proposed control strategy, highlighting its suitability for renewable energy applications such as wind turbines. This study contributes to advancing wind energy technology by providing insights into the performance of the sliding mode control method and its potential to enhance energy conversion efficiency and grid integration.
