Wide area damping control designed for renewable energy integrated power system sustained with communication delays and saturation

Adding renewable energy sources (RES) to a conventional power system can have a negative effect on inter-area oscillation. Solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy conversion systems (WECS) are the most popular renewable energy sources (RES). The integration of solar PV power generation and WECS with power systems happened through the use of a power electronic converter. Growing the quantity of renewable energy sources generation leads to a decrease in the system damping, towards inter-area oscillation. Also, the intermittent behavior of a RES reduces the effectiveness of damping controllers. In addition, the intermittent of a RES decreases the performance of damping controllers. This paper proposes a dynamic controller that uses wide area damping controller (WADC) to enhance the stability of small signals in a RES integrated power system. The WADC is intended to take into account delays in communication channels, failures in communication, and saturation. To overcome the effect of actuator saturation, an anti-windup compensator has been developed. In order to calculate the gain of the anti-windup compensator, Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF) is used to calculate linear matrix inequality (LMI). To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design methodology. Two examples that are both simple and relevant are presented.
