First Implementation of Drilling Process Automation with AI-Powered ROP Optimization on a Jack-Up Rig in ADNOC Offshore Field

Abstract This paper discusses ADNOC Offshore’s first implementation of a drilling process automation platform coupled with AI-powered ROP optimizer to fully automate drill-a-stand process in an offshore UAE field. The trial allows demonstrating the value of the solutions and gather lessons learned that will help the company to scale the solutions to other compatible rigs in the fleet. The trial has seen positive performance gain in the upper part of 12 ¼" section (+27%) and 8 ½" lateral section (+15%) in terms of on-bottom ROP improvement thanks to the AI-driven optimization solution. It has successfully optimized the WOB and RPM parameters when given sufficient search space which would otherwise have been done through manual drill-off tests that largely depends on the individual experience of the driller. The drilling process automation has also brought consistency in the post-connection and connection times. Consistent improvement on the connection times for 12 ¼" and 8 ½" section have been observed in both pre-connection (−37%&−20%) and post-connection (−35%&−21%) thanks to the sequencing of the main drilling equipment through the process automation platform. Ultimately, the trial provided an opportunity to engage the drilling team with new technologies through training, pre-section technical discussions, as well as daily exchanges on the operations. Positive feedback has been received from the end users which lays a good foundation for success of future long-term deployment. This provides a platform to enable ADNOC Offshore drilling organization to continuously improve drilling efficiency and transfer best practice through a more process-oriented approach thanks to automation. Some key challenges have also been observed and valuable lessons learned obtained. There’s no doubt that process automation and real-time ROP optimizer are powerful tools to improve drilling efficiency. However, we have also observed that a people-centered approach is key to unlock value from such solutions. Fundamentally the company’s goal is to build up teams who understand both the advantages and the limitations of automation as well as any other digital tools, so that they can apply them in the right way for the right application in the well construction process.
