UAE First Open Hole Level 5 MLTBS Well with Full Intervention Capabilities

Abstract Oil Field A, one of the largest offshore oil fields globally, is situated in the Arabian Gulf and operated by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). The field presents significant challenges in maintaining production due to its mature status and the complexity of its multiple producing reservoirs. To overcome these challenges necessitates the application of meticulous planning and innovative technology. The initiatives are designed not only to enhance recovery from the field but also to ensure its sustained productivity and operational efficiency over the long term. The Oil Field A has historically utilized dual completion methods to maximize production from two different reservoirs. Producing from both the upper and lower drain reservoirs within the same wellbore helps reduce operational costs and manage the limited drilling slots in offshore fields. However, one of the major limitations found in the existing dual completion system is the inability to effectively stimulate and access the upper drain for logging. Stimulation techniques, such as acidizing or water shut-off, which are commonly used to improve flow in mature carbonate reservoirs, cannot be applied to the upper drain. This paper highlights key information about the Multilateral Tie-Back System (MLTBS) Level 5 uncemented junction, designed to enhance oil recovery. This system offers several operational advantages, including reduced complexity, improved access to key reservoir zones, and cost savings through faster well construction and deployment. It employs a pressure/mechanically isolated, non-cemented Level 5 junction across the Upper Drain and an innovative combined trip for liner deployment and whipstock retrieval. The architecture allows unrestricted access to both upper and lower drain zones of the reservoir, thus enhancing reservoir contact.
