Basic principles of deratization and analysis of the effect of baits with different content of the active substance brodifacoum

Complete success in rodent control is impossible without a complex of measures, including preventive and extermination works, whose organization and planning is carried out taking into account the sanitary and technical condition of the object and territory. High results in rodent control are achieved only after careful study of their biology, ecology, ethology and behavior; complete elimination of rodents from a given territory is possible only by combining ecological and ethological principles. The most effective method of rodent control is the constant use of deratization agents in all habitats without exception. At present, the deratization of facilities and territories is carried out mainly with the use of rodenticide baits. The effectiveness of deratization treatments depends on the quality, composition and compliance with the instructions for use of rodenticides. Timely detection of defects and risks in treatments with their subsequent elimination and correction at the stages of work allows to achieve significant results. Practical experience shows that saving on bait consumption during treatment leads to a decrease in efficiency. The baits should be placed taking into account the habitats of rodents, their palatability and the effect of the active substance (AS) contained in their composition on the organism. The effect of substances on the organism is already present at low concentrations of the active ingredient, but at the same time the biological activity of the rodenticide agent decreases. Application of such concentrations does not allow to achieve the desired result in the required time. Concentration of brodifacoum DV 0,0025 % and higher allows to achieve the desired result. It is important to take into account that the consumption of rodenticidal food baits increases with decreasing concentration of DV. House mice and gray rats eat the baits until they die. Thus, house mice consumed 7.5–7.8 g of bait containing 0.001, 0.0025, and 0.005 % DV brodifacoum, and gray rats consumed 26.5 g of bait containing 0.001% DV, 24.4 g of bait containing 0.0025 % DV, and 10.4 g of bait containing 0.005 % DV. The variation in time of rodent mortality ranged from 3-10 days. At the minimum content of DV in baits, the biological activity of the active ingredient decreases and the time of rodent mortality increases. This fact should be taken into account when organizing and carrying out deratization treatments.
