On the Cultivation of Children’s Autonomous Learning Ability under Montessori’s Theory of Liberal Education

Montessori believed that children have "inner vitality" and education should follow their natural development, respect individual differences, and guide them to learn independently by creating a prepared environment and cultivating self-discipline and independence. However, freedom is not a free-for-all, but an orderly freedom under the guidance of rules and educators' wisdom, aiming to stimulate children's potential for independent learning and cultivate their independent thinking and creative problem-solving abilities. This paper discusses the value of Montessori's theory of free education for the cultivation of children's independent learning ability, and reveals its important inspiration for contemporary preschool education: educators need to attach great importance to children's autonomy and their unique individual differences, and to carefully design and implement diversified and practical learning activities. On this basis, teachers should actively change their roles from traditional knowledge instillers to guides and supporters of children's learning process, so as to inject fresh impetus into the high-quality development of preschool education.
