Problems of Psychosomatic Health Aspects of Student Youth under Martial Law Conditions

This article presents an in-depth analysis of the psychosomatic aspects of student youth health in Ukraine. The issue is examined through the lens of a close interconnection between mental states — such as depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) — and the physical health of young individuals. The relevance of the topic is underscored by the recognition that student health forms the foundation of the nation’s future social and economic development. The objective of this research is to assess the prevalence of mental disorders among student youth as a consequence of wartime experiences and to evaluate the risks of developing psychosomatic conditions. The study is based on surveys, meta- analyses, and international scientific findings that demonstrate a sharp increase in depressive and anxiety symptoms among Ukrainian students. In some studies, anxiety levels reached as high as 88.9%, and PTSD was significantly more common among students residing in active combat zones. The article outlines biological, psychological, and social mechanisms underlying psychosomatic disorders. It is shown that depressive states trigger inflammatory processes, hormonal dysregulation, and structural changes in the brain, such as hippocampal atrophy. Anxiety disorders are associated with a wide range of somatic symptoms — including cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and gastrointestinal manifestations. PTSD, in particular, is linked to chronic pain, physiological hyperarousal, fatigue, and psychological dissociation. In conclusion, the article highlights the urgent need for a systemic, state-supported approach to mental health care for youth. It recommends the implementation of wellness programs in higher education institutions, enhanced access to psychological support, and the integration of physical education into academic curricula. The article offers valuable insights for educators, healthcare professionals, psychologists, and those involved in youth policy and public health.
